Password Protect ZIP Files

Encrypt ZIP files with passwords using 7-Zip AES-256 encryption for maximum security.

Step 1: Open Add to Archive Dialog

Select the files you want to compress and protect. Right-click, choose "7-Zip" > "Add to archive..." to open the dialog.

Step 2: Set Archive Format to ZIP

In the "Archive format" dropdown, select "zip". This ensures the archive is in ZIP format, compatible with most systems.

Step 3: Enter Password

In the "Encryption" section on the right side of the dialog, enter a strong password in both the "Enter password" and "Reenter password" fields.

Step 4: Choose Encryption Method

7-Zip offers two encryption methods for ZIP: "ZipCrypto" (legacy, less secure but universally compatible) and "AES-256" (modern, highly secure, compatible with WinZip and modern tools). Choose AES-256 for best security.

Step 5: Create the Encrypted Archive

Click OK to create the password-protected ZIP. Anyone trying to open or extract the archive will need the password you set.

ZIP vs 7z for Password Protection

ZIP supports AES-256 encryption but cannot encrypt filenames — anyone can see the file list inside. For maximum privacy, use 7z format which supports encrypting both file contents AND filenames. Only 7z offers "Encrypt file names" option.

Sharing Password-Protected ZIPs

When sharing encrypted ZIPs, send the password through a different channel than the file itself (e.g., file via email, password via SMS). Never include the password in the same message as the archive.
