Open RAR Files with 7-Zip

Complete guide to opening RAR and RAR5 files using 7-Zip on Windows — no WinRAR needed.

Install 7-Zip (Free)

Download and install 7-Zip from the official 7-zip.org website. It's completely free and can open all RAR formats including RAR5. No WinRAR purchase is needed.

Right-Click the RAR File

Locate your .rar file in Windows Explorer. Right-click it and navigate to "7-Zip" in the context menu.

Choose "Open Archive"

Select "Open archive" to browse the RAR contents in the 7-Zip File Manager without extracting. You can view files, extract specific files, or extract everything.

Opening Multi-Volume RAR

For split RAR archives (.part1.rar, .part2.rar, etc.), open the first part (.part1.rar or the file ending in .rar without a number). 7-Zip automatically detects all parts.

Opening Password-Protected RAR

If the RAR is encrypted, 7-Zip prompts for the password when you try to open or extract it. Enter the correct password to access the contents.
