Create ZIP Files with 7-Zip

Learn how to create and compress ZIP archives using 7-Zip with optimal settings.

Quick Method: Right-Click

Select the file(s) or folder(s) you want to compress, right-click, and choose "7-Zip" > "Add to archive...". In the dialog, set "Archive format" to "zip" and click OK.

Choosing Compression Level

7-Zip offers six compression levels for ZIP: Store (no compression), Fastest, Fast, Normal, Maximum, and Ultra. Higher levels produce smaller files but take longer. For most use cases, "Normal" provides a good balance.

Optimizing Compression

7-Zip's deflate implementation is optimized to achieve 2-10% better compression than PKZip and WinZip. For even better compression, consider using the 7z format instead of ZIP, which uses LZMA2 and typically achieves 30-50% smaller files.

Creating Split ZIP Volumes

To split a large ZIP into smaller parts: in the "Add to archive" dialog, set "Volumes, bytes" to your desired part size (e.g., "100m" for 100 MB). 7-Zip creates .zip.001, .zip.002, etc.

Creating Self-Extracting ZIP

7-Zip can create self-extracting ZIP archives (.exe) that extract without any software installed. In the dialog, check "Create SFX archive" before clicking OK.

Adding Files to Existing ZIP

To add more files to an existing ZIP: open the ZIP in 7-Zip File Manager, then drag new files from Windows Explorer into the 7-Zip window. The files will be added to the archive.
